Three Village School Budget Passes by Wide Margin

The decision by the Three Village Central School District to stay below the cap this year paid off on Tuesday when voters approved the proposed $184.53 million budget. The 2013-2014 budget passed with 64.7 percent voter approval, with 3,198 people voting for and 1,741 people voting against the budget.

Cops: Stony Brook Student Ran Drug Operation From Dorm Room

A Stony Brook University student pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to seven drug-related charges she faces after police say they found marijuana, hallucinogens, drug paraphernalia and more than $35,000 in cash in her dorm room, according to a Newsday report. Lola Tan, a senior from Elmhurst, Queens, who is double-majoring in economics and psychology, is charged with second-degree, third-degree, fifth-degree and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. She also faces two counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia and one count of unlawful possession of marijuana.

2 Sex Offenders Register Residences in Setauket Area

A moderate-risk Level 1 sex offender and a moderate-risk Level 2 sex offender have registered residences in the Setauket area, according to a letter released Monday by the Three Village Central School District. While the letter does not detail the residence of the Level 1 sex offender, it lists the residence of the Level 2 sex offender on Flagpole Lane. 

Comptroller: Past Old Field Treasurer Stole Nearly $60K from Village

A state audit and investigation into the Village of Old Field has uncovered the alleged theft of close to $60,000 in village money by its former treasurer, the state comptroller announced Wednesday. Andrea Brosnan, 42, of Port Jefferson, was arrested Wednesday. She pleaded not guilty in District Court to charges of second-degree grand larceny, first-degree falsifying business records, and defrauding the government, each a felony, as well as official misconduct, a misdemeanor. She was released on her own recognizance.

School District Mulls Adding Pre-K Program

Three Village school administrators have released a survey they hope will gauge the community's interest in a tuition-based pre-kindergarten program for 4-year-olds should one be launched in the district. Cathy Taldone, director of school and community partnerships for the district, said such a program would exist completely outside the school budget. "It would be tuition that is competitive with what other preschool programs charge, and it would be a self-supporting program similar to the school-age child care program funded by parent fees," she said.
