William Floyd Too Powerful for Ward Melville in Homecoming Game

Colonials defeat Patriots 49-18 on Saturday.

Seniors Alex Mason and Frank Lucatuorto and junior Rob Mendez each scored touchdowns for Ward Melville, but the defense had trouble managing perennial Division I powerhouse William Floyd, and Floyd defeated Ward Melville 49-18 in the Patriots' homecoming game on Saturday.

With Floyd (2-1) leading 42-12 with 1:18 left in the game, Ward Melville (2-1) executed a successful onsides kick but couldn't follow through with a score.

Floyd's Stacey Bedell rushed for four touchdowns, and Vontrell Nash scored a touchdown and made a key interception in the first quarter that preserved the Colonials' lead. After the game, Floyd coach Paul Longo had positive things to say about Ward Melville's game.

"I thought they were pretty tough on offense. I thought their backs ran hard, I thought the quarterback ran hard," he said. "I was impressed with their offense."
