Following a seventh-place finish in the 2010 International Fencing Federation's World Cup, Ward Melville student Alexa Antipas fought her way to a third-place finish in September.
Antipas, 16, is the No. 7 ranked fencer in the cadet women's sabre category for athletes under the age of 17, which allows her to represent the U.S. on the cadet women's circuit.
The top 15 out of 138 athletes who compete nationally make it to the World Cup.
Antipas not only plays for the Ward Melville fencing team, but she also trains at Mission Fencing Center in Rocky Point, both under the instruction of coach Jeff Salmon. She said it's rewarding for her hard work to pay off in such fashion.
"It is rewarding to be part of such an elite group," she said.
