Seawolves Headed to NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

Stony Brook defeats Albany 14-3 to win first conference championship.

The Seawolves made women's lacrosse history on Sunday as the team earned its first-ever America East title and trip to the NCAA tournament with a 14-3 win over arch-rival Albany at LaValle Stadium.

"We spoke all year about winning the conference tournament," head coach Joe Spallina said in a statement. "Losing last year hurt. We spoke all year about getting better, peaking at the right time, and our kids did that."

Janine Hillier tallied three goals and three assists, and was named the tournament's "Most Outstanding Player" for totaling nine points in the two games. Emily Mercier and Demmianne Cook also scored a hattrick apiece.

"We have a special group of kids and a great group of seniors who drive the ship," Spallina said. "I’m so happy for them and our kids. We have the greatest kids. They work so hard. This is special. Now we’re hoping to make noise in the NCAA Tournament. We feel we’ve done enough to host a game."

Stony Brook (15-2), ranked the No. 10 team in the nation in the IWLCA (coaches') poll, will play Towson on May 10 in a first-round NCAA game (time to be announced).
