Stony Brook Named Among Nation's 'Smartest Cities'

Study was based on people's responses to cognitive training exercises.

The hamlet of Stony Brook beat out cities such as Berkeley, California, Boulder, Colorado, and East Lansing, Michigan, to come in as the No. 19 smartest city in the U.S. according to a slate of rankings released by Lumosity.com.

Lumosity, a company that has developed online tools they claim can train your brain to be "smarter, sharper, and brighter," based its rankings on the geographical location of the IP addresses of more than two million people in the U.S. who took their tests.

College towns fared well on the list: Stanford, California and Princeton, New Jersey topped the list as No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Other New York-area places named in Lumosity's top 50 were Ithaca (No. 9), Webster (No. 41) and Bethpage (No. 48).
