Mount Elementary Students Learn Fire Safety

Stony Brook firefighters visit the school to offer fire safety tips.

As part of Fire Prevention Month, W.S. Mount Elementary School students recently practiced and discussed important safety procedures with members of the Stony Brook Fire Department.

Firefighters visited kindergartners, first-graders and second-graders in their classrooms and spoke about the need for a predetermined escape plan in the event of a fire and the importance of household smoke detectors.

Dressed in their protective gear, the volunteers also discussed the different pieces of equipment firefighters wear when entering a burning building. After receiving honorary firefighter helmets, the students had the chance to step aboard an actual fire truck and take an up-close look at the equipment the firefighters use.

The important messages about fire prevention and safety echoed in the school’s auditorium as the third- through sixth-grade classes attended informative assembly programs with members of the fire department, where the students learned the proper precautions to take when faced with a fire as well as several tips for preventing such an event.
