JHS Science Olympiad Teams Head to States

Gelinas ranked first, Murphy ranked second at regionals.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team placed first and R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s team placed second in the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiad Tournament, held at Candlewood Middle School. 

Gelinas and Murphy each entered three teams, each of which competed in 18 events against 30 teams from schools all across Suffolk County. Gelinas’s “Varsity” team won an unprecedented nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals in the 18 events. The three Murphy teams won a total of five gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals.

Three Village dominated the competition with all six teams, placing in the top six out of 33 teams that competed in the tournament. Teams from both schools will now advance to the state tournament, which will be held at Greece Arcadia High School in Rochester, N.Y., on April 4-5.

The Gelinas program is coached by Gary Vorwald, Ed Daguerre, and Monica Gerber and is assisted by volunteer coaches Chris Marotta, Mrs. Hope Schroeder, Mrs. DiFede and Dr. Gupta, who helped mentor the students on various topics. The three Murphy teams are coached by Sue McGuire, Derek Angermaier and Pam Pahuja.
