Gelinas, Ward Melville Science Olympiad Teams Headed to Nationals

Murphy Junior High also performed at an elite level at the state tournament.

Ward Melville's Science Olympiad team topped 50 others in the state, while Gelinas placed first and Murphy have placed third at their levels in the state tournament, the school district announced this week. The wins for WMHS and Gelinas qualify the teams to compete at the national level in May. Gelinas has qualified for the national tournament nine out of the past 10 years, while Ward Melville has been ranked the No. 14, No. 18, and No. 16 team in the nation in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively. The Science Olympiad competition pits teams against each other in events spanning the disciplines of physics, chemistry, earth science, biology and technology.
