For Sale: Own a Piece of Local History

A home once owned by the area's first millionaire is up for sale.

A million bucks might not get you what it used to. But you could own the home that once belonged to a millionaire – actually, the man considered the first millionaire in the area.

Jonas Smith made a killing running a shipbuilding company in the 19th century, reportedly supplying a thirsty New York City market while living in Stony Brook. The home for sale today, at 35 Main St., is on the market for $595,000.

According to Newsday, the home was renovated in 2009, though with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in the library, it still harkens back to the days before a typical modern home office.

An open house is being held this weekend, on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. Asking price on the home has dropped dramatically, most recently down from $699,000 and from an initial listing price of over $800,000 for the piece of local history.

Smith also owned the home that today is better known as the Three Village Inn.

Michael Ardolino at RealtyConnect USA is the agent representing the property.
