Town of Brookhaven Declares State of Emergency
Acting supervisor issues 6 p.m. closure for town beaches and parks on Sunday.
Acting town supervisor Kathy Walsh declared a state of emergency in the Town of Brookhaven at noon on Saturday.
Walsh also issued an order closing all town beaches, marinas and parks as of 6 p.m. on Sunday, and recommended that boat owners take their boats out of the water. Ramps will be open throughout the day.
"There is a reasonable apprehension of immediate danger from the approach of
Hurricane Sandy toward the Town of Brookhaven ... the public safety of those located in the Town of Brookhaven are imperiled by the approach of the storm," Walsh said in a statement.

Brookhaven officials also warned those in coastal communities that they should be prepared for flooding and potential evacuations.
Suffolk County has announced the availability of several emergency shelters, including one within Brookhaven at Sachem East High School, located at 177 Granny Road in Farmingville.

A state of emergency was also declared in Suffolk County as of 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, with Suffolk County Steve Bellone ordering the mandatory evacuation of Fire Island, with residents to vacate by 2 p.m. on Sunday.
