Safety Advisory Issued for Stony Brook Beachfront Areas

Rainfall prompts Suffolk County Department of Health Services to caution against bathing at 66 beaches in Suffolk.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services on Monday issued an advisory against bathing at 66 beaches in Suffolk, including beaches at Stony Brook Harbor, Stony Brook Yacht Club, and West Meadow Creek, due to heavy rainfall.

"The advisory is based on the potential that bacterial numbers in excess of New York State standards, resulting from the heavy rain, will impact these areas," the department said in a statement.

The 66 beaches involved experience limited tidal flushing and are affected by stormwater runoff. The advisory is in effect until Tuesday at 8 p.m.
