WATCH: Same Sex Couples Marry at Town Hall

Brookhaven Town Hall opened on Sunday to allow couples to apply for marriage licenses and get married.

Brookhaven was the only municipality in Suffolk, and one of only two on Long Island, to open on Sunday for couples who wanted to apply for marriage licenses the very day New York's marriage equality law took effect. Close to 40 same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses and 13 couples were married on Sunday at Brookhaven Town Hall, accompanied by friends, family, and GLBT rights advocates.

Editor's Note: This story has been updated from a previous version, based on new information from the Town Clerk's office, which said 11 couples were married at Town Hall on Sunday.
