Last Chance: Rent a P.O. Box to Help Save the Setauket Post Office

Community activists seeking to get dozens more boxes rented in the hope that the U.S. Postal Service won't shut down the Setauket branch.

Back in January, a group of community activists launched a campaign to get 100 new post office boxes rented at the tiny Setauket Post Office on Main Street that is in danger of being closed by the U.S. Postal Service.

The group set a goal of April 1, saying it would send a timely message to the U.S.P.S. that the Main Street post office is too important to the community to be closed. There's a mortatorium on closures in place until May. But so far, around 30 boxes have been rented up until this point, not the 100 the group had hoped for.

A 3-inch by 5.5-inch P.O. box costs $120 per year, according to USPS.com. Larger size boxes cost up to $320.

If someone were to rent a box in that location, what happens if the little PO is closed? Are there enough boxes in the large PO to accommodate everyone from the little PO?

Hi LivingSmall, at a January meeting with members of the community, the U.S. Postal Service said that P.O. Boxes at the small P.O. will be transferred to the big P.O. They have said there will be space to accommodate those customers.

Justme.. Even if everyone voted no the raises were locked. By voting no programs would have beenRead More decimated more and more teachers given pink slips. The problem here is the BOE giving the union these contracts. It's time to STOP THE MADNESS!!

Yes TC change is difficult but it has to start somewhere. What motivation does the BOE have toRead More change when we keep passing the budgets? Budgets have to fail, programs have to be cut before there will be any union negotiations. Many have to lose their jobs before they will allow their pay to be cut. Sounds harsh but it's reality. Our children will survive cuts, be educated and successful - even with less programs.
