Last Chance: Rent a P.O. Box to Help Save the Setauket Post Office

Community activists seeking to get dozens more boxes rented in the hope that the U.S. Postal Service won't shut down the Setauket branch.

Back in January, a group of community activists launched a campaign to get 100 new post office boxes rented at the tiny Setauket Post Office on Main Street that is in danger of being closed by the U.S. Postal Service.

The group set a goal of April 1, saying it would send a timely message to the U.S.P.S. that the Main Street post office is too important to the community to be closed. There's a mortatorium on closures in place until May. But so far, around 30 boxes have been rented up until this point, not the 100 the group had hoped for.

A 3-inch by 5.5-inch P.O. box costs $120 per year, according to USPS.com. Larger size boxes cost up to $320.
