Greenway Trail Expansion in Full Swing, Causing Some Questions

At least one resident is not happy with the trail's progress.

A wider-than-anticipated swath of forest has been cleared as the expansion of the Greenway Trail has gotten underway and has caused some friction over that development, according to a report published Thursday in The Village Times Herald.

Setauket resident Doranne Metz and Friends of the Greenway chairman Charles McAteer both told The Village Times Herald the trail so far appears to be wider than the initial 13 feet, measuring as wide as 95 feet in one place and as wide as 42 feet in others.

A state Department of Transportation spokeswoman said the department is aware of the width issue, saying that shoulders and gutters will put the final width of the trail at 21 feet and it may fluctuate more depending on what the grade of the land and stormwater runoff mitigation might require.
