Discard Pills, E-Waste in 'Green' Fashion at Takeback Program

Bring old prescription pills and electronics to the Main Street fire house in Setauket for proper disposal and recycling.

Once, we brought you Now, here are two more ways to do just that.

Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., you can bring your old prescription pills and electronic devices Saturday at the for a takeback program co-sponsored by the state's Drug Enforcement Agency and the Setauket Fire Department. The federal Food and Drug Administration encourages safe disposal of unused drugs because traces of drugs have been found in surface water and drinking water supplies. Additionally, community leaders have urged people to be careful of the controlled substances they keep in their homes, as some prescription pills have become the target for thieves.

Between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., you can also bring your old or broken electronic devices – such as TVs, DVD players, computers, and more – to the fire house for an e-waste collection event co-sponsored by Brookhaven Town Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld and the Setauket Fire District. "A lot of this stuff can be recycled, but for the most part people just throw it in the trash," fire district commissioner Kevin Yoos said.

He also said these events are just one way in which the Setauket Fire District and Department are supportive of the community.

"I’d like to get the community to see that we’re out there for them as much as possible," he said. "They don’t always see us out there, but we’re always here as a center for the community."
