County Issues Advisories at Local Beaches Following Heavy Rains

Bacteria levels at eight local beaches – excluding West Meadow Beach – were found to be in excess of acceptable limits.

Following Monday's heavy rainfall and in anticipation of more rain on Tuesday, Suffolk County officials have placed 67 beaches – including eight in the Three Village area – under a beach advisory due to elevated levels of bacteria, and have cautioned residents to avoid bathing in these areas.

According to a county release, these beaches are "heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries." Two successive tidal cycles will usually fix the problem by flushing the area, according to the county.

The local beaches listed are:

  • Grantland Beach
  • Indian Field Beach
  • Bayberry Cove Beach
  • Bayview Beach
  • Little Bay Beach
  • Soundview Beach Association Beach
  • Stony Brook Beach
  • Stony Brook Yacht Club Beach

The advisory is set to expire at 6 p.m. Thursday unless the Department of Health Services tests the waters again and finds bacteria levels have fallen within the normal range.

As a parent the Stormwater run off issue is slightly disturbing.
