2 Local Beaches Remain Closed to Bathing

Suffolk's Department of Health Services detected high levels of bacteria in water samples.

Suffolk County health officials have determined that two local areas are to remain closed to swimming or bathing until further notice.

Stony Brook Yacht Club Beach in Stony Brook and Bayberry Cove Beach in Setauket were closed on Thursday and remain closed due to "bacteria levels in excess of acceptable criteria," according to Dr. James Tomarken, Suffolk Commissioner of Health Services.

The beaches will stay closed until health officials are able to ensure the bacteria count is an an acceptable level. The water will be tested on a daily basis to reopen the beach as soon as possible.

Nearby Beech Road Beach in Rocky Point, Tides Beach in Rocky Point, and Sound Beach POA West in Sound Beach are also closed to bathing. For more information, beachgoers can visit www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health or call 631-852-5822.
