Repair Work Gets Underway at Gelinas

Damage from Nov. 18 fire was only external.

The process of repairing the clock tower damaged in the Nov. 18 fire at Gelinas Junior High School is underway, with scaffolding erected to allow workers to restore the structure.

Though school administrators don't yet have a concrete dollar amount to put to the damage, the district said the repairs will be covered by its insurance policy.

"We're not actually cutting any checks," said Jeff Carlson, assistant superintendent for business services.

Inspections showed the fire damage was limited to the building's exterior, with only minor water cleanup needed inside the building after the fire was extinguished.

Carlson said the repair work has not disrupted classes.

The fire was reported by a passerby on Nov. 18 around 12:45 a.m. and took firefighters a little under an hour to extinguish. The cause of the fire is thought to be related to roofing work being done at the district's three secondary schools.

"I don't think there's any dispute" over the cause, Carlson said. "Part of the work is torching. ... Somehow a spark got into that clock tower and just started smoldering."
