Police Seek Man Using Counterfeit Bills

Suffolk County police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man they say used counterfeit money at a Centereach fast food restaurant.

According to police, the man placed an order at the McDonald’s located at 1724 Middle Country Road and paid for the food using a counterfeit $20 bill on Jan. 8 at 9:15 p.m.

Police are offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. According to police, all calls will be kept confidential.

Something seems very wrong about the facts as they are reported in this story. Anyone of us could be that person innocently passing a counterfeit $20 bill. And to have our image portrayed for all to see, all the while announcing a $5,000 reward for our arrest adds greatly to the public's perception that we must be a severe criminal. However, if there is more to this story and the police have other references that this person has made a history of passing counterfeit $20 bills, then we have a far different story; but what remains is: Why would all the facts not be reported to the public?

Hello Jennifer - just saw your reply now; sorry for the delay. I just want to let you know that I was not commenting negatively on 3 village patch specifically - it was more about how the police could target a person - who very well may be innocent - with a news release that includes a photo and implies guilt by offering a $5,000 reward for info that leads to his arrest.
