Cupola Comes Down, Main Street Fire House Re-Opened

Heavy winds had damaged the cupola that housed the fire siren at the Setauket Fire Department's Main Street fire house.

A construction crew on Saturday was able to remove the cupola atop the Setauket Main Street fire house, solving the safety threat caused by high winds that had damaged the supports and caused the cupola to lean in the wind on Thursday.

According to fire district manager Dave Sterne, the fire house was re-opened immediately following the removal of the cupola, which has been placed in a secure location. The cost of removal is still undetermined but will be covered by insurance.

The fire siren continues to be disabled until an electrician can come look at it during the next few days, Sterne said.

"Right now the cupola not being there doesn't really affect our operation," he said.

On Thursday, the Board of Fire Commissioners will discuss the next steps of handling the cupola at its regular board meeting at 7 p.m. at its headquarters at 26 Hulse Road.
