Car Burns at Gas Station

Fire was not near pumps; minor damage to station.

Setauket firefighters responded to a car fire at the BP gas station on Nesconset Highway yesterday afternoon, extinguishing flames that left the vehicle a blackened shell.

There were no injuries.

The BP sign and an adjacent pay phone were damaged by the flames and intense heat.

The flames were hot enough to melt the aluminum rear tire rim of the car, which was parked away from the pumps when it caught fire, according to Robert O'Rourke of the Setauket Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was not specified.
