Boy on Bike Injured in Collision with Parked Van

Van's owner calls for sidewalks or bike lane on Old Town Road.

A 17-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after colliding with a parked van while riding his bicycle northbound on Old Town Road in East Setauket on Monday evening.

The boy had been wearing a helmet but the owner of the van, who gave his name only as Mike, feared he sustained a head injury and called for an ambulance.

"He's a young kid, he put his head down for a second and ran right into the back of my van," said Mike, a friend of the homeowner near where the accident took place. "They should put sidewalks or a bike path on this road."

An officer at the scene said "everybody's okay" but declined to provide specific information, and the boy left in the company of his mother, who declined to comment on the incident. According to an official police report, the incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Monday and the boy had minor injuries to his hands, arm and neck.

The accident scene was not far from the stretch of Old Town Road where a carrying two students in December; there were no injuries in that accident. Safety on Old Town Road has long been a concern for its residents.
