What is Kiwanis Anyway?

My name is Julie Watterson and I am the current President of the Kiwanis Club of Three Village-Brookhaven Township.  It is my honor to serve our community as one of the leaders of this brilliant group of volunteers.  Our members are 38 strong and growing. The Kiwanis Club of Three Village was originally chartered on October 19, 1988, 25 years ago.

What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis International is a global organization of members dedicated to serving the children of the world. Kiwanis and its family of clubs—nearly 600,000 members strong—annually raise more than US$100 million and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children. Members of every age attend regular meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that help their communities. Members also make an impact throughout the world by participating in Kiwanis International’s Global Campaign for Children, The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Who are the Kiwanis members?
Kiwanis is made up of men and women from the local community who bond together in fellowship and service.  We come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences ranging from stay-at-home moms, small business owners, students and retired folks.  Although we come from different places, we all have community service at heart.

What does the Kiwanis do?
The Three Village-Brookhaven Club is an active club.  We are constantly planning fundraisers and events.  100% of the proceeds from our organization go back to our charitable causes.  We sponsor the Ward Melville High School Key Club, a Kiwanis service organization for high school students which boasts 240 members at Ward Melville!  We also sponsor the Circle K Club at Stony Brook University, which currently has about 25 student members dedicated to community service.

Some of our upcoming events include a Bowling Day on April 12 from 2-4pm, a fundraiser for Eliminate.  We will host a Yard Sale on April 26-27 from 9am-4pm at 59 Hargrove Drive in Stony Brook.  We are hosting a Psychic Night on May 1 from 6:30-9pm at the Setauket Neighborhood House as a fundraiser for local drug abuse prevention programs.  We are walking as a team to support the Ronald McDonald House of LI on May 10 at the Holtsville Ecology Center at their Walk of Love Fundraiser.  We are assisting at the Special Olympics at Southampton High School on May 18.  We are hosting our 18th annual Golf Outing at St. George's Golf & Country Club on July 14.

All of these fundraisers and events take planning and time.  Our members take time from their own busy schedules each day for this.  Why?  Because they love our mission and they love giving back!

Our mission:  We want to change the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time.
