Being single in the suburbs is like being a zebra amidst a jungle of chameleons. Add into the mix, parenting four kids while running a business and the appetite for dating becomes completely impossible to feed. So opportunities like speaking to someone at the supermarket checkout line and joking around with another while pumping gas are moments that one cannot afford to lose if one wants to keep a healthy balance of conversations with the opposite sex.
Not too long ago, such a moment did arise and I, with two of my young ones in tow, decided to seize it ... foolish me. Now, for some odd reason, if I am flirting with a guy, I tend to start talking nerd-speak, which then leads to jokes that are nothing short of being corny. So here I am discussing a Supreme Court cyber crime case I just read about and talking about the effects of such rulings in the long term.
Lucky for me, his eyes aren't glazing over yet with boredom so I continue on. And then like clockwork, my 6-year-old decides to interrupt and announce aloud, "Mom, there's the woman who waxes your mustache!"

So like any mother, I pretend to not hear this and maintain my train of thought.
"What? Mom has a mustache?", my 3-year old asks while sitting in the cart holding up his hands palms up and shrugging his shoulders. "But I thought mom was a girl!"

"She is, but she's Pakistani. Everyone from Pakistan has a mustache," the older one replied matter-of-factly.
Inside voices, while great in theory, have yet to be properly applied by children all over the world, I believe. Needless to say, the humorous situation gained me a friend that day who accepts me, mustache and all.
