Weekend Guide: 'A Taste of the Neighborhood,' Gardening Workshop & More

Patch picks for weekend activities.

Spring is in full swing in Three Village, and along with it comes a selection of spring-like events including sports and gardening. Also on tap: a pair of charitable benefits, live coffeehouse music, arts, theater and more.

Benefit Events

  • The Setauket Neighborhood House recently underwent a makeover, and on Friday at 7 p.m., the venue will play host to "A Taste of the Neighborhood" to show its new look to the community and raise funds to support those renovations. Tickets are $25 and include food and drink from a variety of eateries across town.
  • Meet Dina Proctor, author of Madly Chasing Peace, in an event that will benefit Response of Suffolk County on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Click here for more details.

  • Benner's Farm is offering an earth-friendly herb and vegetable gardening workshop on Saturday 10 a.m. ($25, $5 discount if you bring a friend). Click here to learn more.

Live Music

  • Grounds & Sounds music coffeehouse venue will open its stage Friday night at 8 p.m. to James O'Malley, a singer/songwriter whose music is all about relationships and personal stories. An open-mic session precedes the headlining performance. Click here for more details.

  • Lip Synch and Talent Show night is Friday night at Setauket Elementary School at 6:30 p.m.
  • A kids' macrame activity will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library (space is limited - registration required).

Arts & Theater

  • Hamlet will be performed at the Staller Center's Theater 1 on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
  • For lovers of opera, Stony Brook's Opera company and Baroque players will perform Handel's Orlando on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
  • On Friday night at 7 p.m., political poet Melissa Fadul will read her work and guests are called to bring a "poem of witness" to share with the group at the Euterpe Poetry Group at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library.
  • Gallery North's current show is Elementary, which displays the works of three Stony Brook art faculty members, each a distinguished member of the Long Island arts community.
  • On Sunday at 2 p.m., The Long Island Museum will host , for "an entertaining insight into the history of New York’s famous landmark."

Sports

  • Check out Stony Brook's baseball series on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. with a third game on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Joe Nathan Field.
  • The Seawolves men's lacrosse team will take on UMBC on Saturday at 4 p.m. at LaValle Stadium.
