Simons Still Richest Long Islander, According to Forbes

East Setauket hedge fund billionaire and philanthropist is tied for No. 28 on Forbes' list of the richest Americans.

Around the Three Village community, Jim Simons is known as the former head of the Stony Brook University math department, the founder of Renaissance Technologies, and the philanthropist who has donated millions to the university.

Simons is also tied for No. 28 on Forbes Magazine's list of the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth of $11 billion.

Formerly the head of SBU's math department, Simons left that post to start Renaissance Technologies in 1982. He retired from day-to-day operations of that company in 2010.

In September of 2011, when his net worth was $10.6 billion, Simons, 74, was listed as the No. 30 wealthiest person in America. Earlier this year, Forbes declared Simons the No. 82 wealthiest person in the world.

In December of 2011, Simons and wife Marilyn donated $150 million to Stony Brook University, the largest-ever donation to a SUNY school.

A handful of other Long Islanders made the list, too: Ira Rennert of Sagaponack is No. 52 ($6.5 billion), Charles Dolan of Oyster Bay is No. 132 ($3 billion), and Kenneth Langone of Sands Point is No. 198 ($1.6 billion).
