SBUMC Gets New Chief of General Surgery

Dr. Aurora Pryor is a Three Village resident.

on Tuesday announced it has appointed Dr. Aurora D. Pryor to the position of professor of surgery and Chief of the Division of General Surgery, Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Burns.

Pryor will also head the new Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery at SBUMC. According to the hospital, she will oversee a team of seven surgeons as well as researchers, nurse practitioners, trauma coordinators and physician assistants. She will also serve as Surgery Department Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, a newly created position in which she will work with other administrators and faculty members to ensure the department achieves its goals of providing top-notch clinical care using leading-edge technologies.

According to the hospital, Pryor has performed more than 1,000 bariatric surgeries, has published dozens of research works, and is the co-editor of two recently published books.

“We are thrilled to have been able to recruit Dr. Pryor, a national thought leader and innovator whose broad expertise in surgery, including minimally invasive and advanced surgical methods, and her leadership roles in training surgeons, makes her an ideal fit to head the Division,” said Dr. Todd Rosengart, professor and chair of the department of surgery.

Pryor comes to Stony Brook from Duke University, where she served for 16 years in the department of surgery, and most recently served as chair of general surgery and bariatric surgery at Durham Regional Hospital. She lives in Stony Brook with her husband, Bill Beasley, and their two children.
