Census: Asian Population Jumps in Stony Brook, Declines in Setauket

New Census data also shows changes in Hispanic, Black populations in Three Village mirror overall trends on Long Island.

Two distinct swings in Three Village's Asian population are evident in new U.S. Census data released last week: an increase in Stony Brook and a decline in Setauket-East Setauket over the last decade.

In Setauket-East Setauket, 2010 data showed an 18.8 percent decline over 2000 numbers in the size of the Asian population, whereas it increased by about 32 percent over the past decade in Stony Brook.

While the two communities are often grouped together geographically and socially, the new Census reports indicate differences in other areas as well. The number of Black or African American residents in Setauket-East Setauket declined over the past decade, while the same group saw an increase in Stony Brook.

Another notable difference is in the area of housing. Stony Brook added housing units over the past decade, while the total number of housing units decreased in Setauket-East Setauket over the same time period. The vacancy rate in Setauket-East Setauket climbed from 1.8 percent in 2000 to 3.5 percent in 2010, whereas in Stony Brook the vacancy rate dropped from 4.4 percent in 2000 to 3.8 in 2010.

The two main communities within Three Village – Setauket-East Setauket and Stony Brook – showed similar changes in several areas, but differed in magnitude. The numbers of Hispanic or Latino residents, for example, have increased in both regions; but Stony Brook saw a more dramatic increase in this demographic than did Setauket-East Setauket.
