5 Upcoming Fundraisers to Support

Here are five ways you can support charitable causes.

Today's edition of "5 Things You Need to Know" is all about the local fundraisers. According to the sponsoring organizations, people in the community can help by coming together in support of these local events. And you can't spell "community" without a "Y," "O," and "U," right?

1. A portion of ticket sales for the Sept. 17 vs. Brown University at LaValle Stadium will benefit the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital to support awareness and treatment of children's cancers. Tickets are available at goseawolves.org.

2. Support prostate cancer research and awareness at a walkathon at Heritage Park in Mt. Sinai starting at 9 a.m. on Sept. 18.

3. Join the Three Village Kiwanis Club for its annual Duck Race on Sept. 24 at East Setauket Pond Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The race benefits a variety of causes supported by the Kiwanis Club.

4. Help raise money for the Sunrise Fund at a free kite-flying festival, Soar for a Cure, on Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at West Meadow Beach.

5. The annual to benefit breast cancer research and patient support is set for Oct. 2 starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Stony Brook Village Center.
