Third Asian Grocery Slated for Stony Brook

Grocery store would open just a few feet away from another Asian market.

Soon, it will be easier to find Kimchi in Stony Brook, than cheese and crackers.

Another Asian grocery store in under construction in the village, near the back of the same center that includes Soups On, Rockabilly Barbers and Green Cactus Mexican Grill.

The new market would be the third Asian market to run in Stony Brook. Another developing Asian grocery store, Stony Brook Asian Mart, is slated to open next to The Bench on Route North Country Road, just a few feet away.

Oriental Groceries on Route 347, was the first Asian market in the area, and has operated there for years.

As of Monday, workers were installing fixtures in the new grocery store, set to be called "Asian Food Market" according to Town of Brookhaven permits displayed at the 1099 North Country Road storefront. Although, the large sign hanging on the window reads "University Asian Market."

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Asian population in Stony Brook has jumped 32 percent since 2000.
