It's not every day you'll hear baroque-era music played on period instruments – but Sunday is a day you can.
Fire & Folly will take the stage on Sunday at Le Petit Salon de Musique, a classical music series at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook. Show time is set for 2 p.m.
Praised as a "tight, high-energy, balanced ensemble" by American Recorder, Fire & Folly, co-founded in 2010 by Port Jefferson Station resident Rachel Begley, will present a show with 18th-century replica instruments called "Mixed Marriages." The show features Begley on recorder and bassoon, co-director Jeffrey Grossman on harpsichord, Leah Nelson on violin, and Ezra Seltzer on cello.
"We are combining forces that you wouldn’t expect to see together," Begley said. "You wouldn’t expect to have a duet between a violin and a bassoon. You wouldn’t expect French music to be paired with Italian music."
Begley, who studied music in her native England before coming to Stony Brook for her Master's and doctorate degrees, said one of her favorite pieces in the show is an 18th-century arrangement of Scottish folk songs put together by an Italian composer.
"It’s kind of wild to think about that happening – and to think about that happening back in the 18th century," she said.
