East Coast Burrito Co. Opens in Setauket

When it comes to the restaurant business, certain best practices exist across all eateries that do well: hiring great employees, developing a compelling menu, listening to customer feedback, making sure everything is fresh. That's according to Tom Freck, co-owner of East Coast Burrito Co., a new fast-casual Tex-Mex eatery that opened in April at 736 Route 25A in Setauket. Freck and partner Tim Martino are no strangers to the restaurant business: Freck has owned Portside Bar & Grill in Port Jefferson for almost five years, and Martino was a longtime chef at Toast in Port Jefferson.

New Chinese Dumpling Eatery Coming to Stony Brook

Red Tiger Chinese Restaurant is replacing Nasrin's Hair Salon, which closed several months ago, in the Coventry Commons shopping center at the corner of Route 347 and Stony Brook Road in Stony Brook. According to a nearby shop owner, the new restaurant is slated to open later this month.

Civic Leader, Town Officials Deliver Illegal Housing Update

There are about 100 known illegal college boarding houses in the Three Village area so far, according to the Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners organization, and there are about 50 Three Village cases presently going through the court system, town officials said. Those revelations were discussed at a meeting of the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook on Monday night.

Summer Camp for Underprivileged Kids on the Horizon at Stony Brook

A pilot program for children from low-income families will send 50 third-grade kids to a free six-week summer camp at Stony Brook University, according to a report published Monday in Newsday. The program, known as a Freedom School, focuses on reading skills with exposure to science and computers. According to Newsday, it is a program established by the Children's Defense Fund and modeled after the Mississippi Freedom Schools that were established in the 1960s.

Crime Report: Sex Offender Arrested; Suspicious Packages Found

A sex offender previously living in Centereach was arrested in Setauket and charged with failing to register a new address. In addition, police were called to investigate two suspicious packages in East Setauket. Click here to read the full report.
