The Great Escape: Enrich Your Reading Experience with a Great 'Literary' Escape

This week learn where you can go to hear an author speak.

Recently, the book club that I belong to attended Jodi Picoult's book signing for her newest novel, Sing You Home. Attending author events and book signings is a wonderful way to gain insight into the background of the novel. You really learn how the characters were developed and the research that went into the novel.

As a writer, I also enjoy learning what inspired authors to write about the topics they have chosen for their newest books. And, of course, after the book signing our book club found a great steakhouse where we enjoyed a delicious dinner and discussed the controversial topic Picoult explores in her newest novel.

If you love to read as much as I do, there are a few places in our area that host authors of fiction and nonfiction books. The event we attended was sponsored by the Book Revue in Huntington. The Book Revue is Long Island's largest independent bookstore and it has a calendar packed with author events. Authors that have promoted their new books there range from politician Madeleine Albright to author James Patterson to reality TV star Snooki.

Barnes & Noble, located in the Smith Haven Mall, is another local book store where you can see your favorite author.

In the next few months, both locations are hosting chefs, television stars and best-selling authors. Why not share these events with your book club and plan a great literary escape? Here's just a few that might interest you:
