Event Spotlight: CrossFit Fundraiser for Ava Grace

Fitness event in Stony Brook will benefit a three-year-old with a congenital heart defect.

Ava Grace Cozenzo has already had two heart surgeries – and doctors say the 3-year-old, who suffers from a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, is in need of a third heart surgery later this year.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is caused when parts of the left side of the heart (mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve, and aorta) do not develop completely while in utero.

Parents Christopher and Danielle Cozenzo, of Yaphank, are turning to the community for support, and on Saturday, CrossFit Stony Brook will host a fundraiser workout session to help them afford Ava Grace's next surgery.

"She has battled some complicated feeding issues along with an aspiration, reflux, and a paralyzed diaphragm. She is courageous and an incredible inspiration to all that know her," said Michael DeNicola, owner of CrossFit Stony Brook.
