Episcopal Church Leader Visits Caroline Church

Bishop Lawrence Provenzano led services on Sept. 30.

Bishop Lawrence Provenzano, who presides over the Episcopal church's Diocese of Long Island, made a stop in Three Village on Sept. 30 to visit the Caroline Church in Setauket.

"Our parishioners were very excited to spend time with Bishop Provenzano, since he has only been in the diocese for three years and the last time we had any Bishop visit us from the Diocese of Long Island was back in 2008," Fr. Richard Visconti said in an email to Patch. "It was a great day of celebration and joy for all."

The bishop confirmed more than a dozen members of the congregation at the service. According to Visconti it was standing-room-only at the service.

Provenzano said in an interview with Patch that his sermon was about making sure worshipers remove things that become stumbling blocks in their lives and in their faith.

"Oftentimes, it's not the things that we think of that are stumbling blocks, like greed and envy and all those things, but that oftentimes it's complacency," he said. "The church is called to not leave things alone, it's called to get people moving."

Provenzano, who is in his fourth year as bishop, called the Caroline Church one of the Long Island diocese's healthiest congregations.

"They're a good, hard working congregation. They're on mission and i'm very proud of them," he said. "I couldn't have been happier ... It was just a wonderful, wonderful Sunday."
