North Shore Montessori Pioneer Living Day Food Drive A Great Success

On Saturday, November 16, 2013, North Shore Montessori School (NSMS) hosted a free, fun-filled day for the entire community while collecting canned and non-perishable food items for local food pantries. Located on Christian Avenue in Stony Brook, the school hosted “Pioneer Living:  A Journey Back in Time Day.”  Over 150 people attended and were able to take part in a wide range of pioneering activities such as panning for gold, grinding corn into cornmeal, rolling bread dough, spinning wool into yarn, washing items with a scrub board, plus playing with folk toys, games and crafts.  Authentic Carriage, Ltd. offered families with carriage rides complete with a coachman in period dress.

"We believe that helping others is in keeping with the spirit of Thanksgiving," said Meg Sheehan, Director of NSMS. "Our students very much enjoy helping the community, and we are all so grateful that so many families were able to spend the afternoon with us."  Eight large boxes of food items were donated to a local food pantry run by the Three Village School District.  Visitors enjoyed coffee, tea, hot chocolate and treats created by The Bite Size Bake Shop.  It was a perfect day for families to help the community and to learn about what life was like for the American pioneers.
