Judge Stephen Ukeiley Found "Qualified" by the Suffolk County Bar Association's Judicial Screening Committee

On February 12, 2014, Judge Stephen Ukeiley, who is running for re-election this year, earned the highest possible rating of "Qualified" from the Suffolk County Bar Association's Judicial Screening Committee.

"I am grateful to the Committee's members for their time and careful consideration. When I became a judge, I made a promise that I would work as hard as I could to ensure justice is achieved in every case that comes before me," said Judge Ukeiley. "Reflecting upon the more than 55,000 cases I have presided over, I can honestly say I worked very hard to remain faithful to that promise."

During the past 5+ years, he has distinguished himself on the Bench, earning the respect of his colleagues, law enforcement, prosecutors, members of the defense bar and the public.

Judge Ukeiley:

  • Presided over in excess of 55,000 civil and criminal cases to completion.
  • Was appointed to a higher Court which allows him to hear felony cases similar to Supreme Court Justices and County Court Judges.
  • Sits in the County's only Human Trafficking Court (there are only 11 throughout New York State).
Judge Ukeiley was elected to the District Court of Suffolk County in 2008 and has sat in the various criminal and civil parts of the District Court. He was elevated by appointment to Acting County Court Judge, effective January 1, 2014, where he presides over the Human Trafficking Court in addition to a Criminal Part.

In addition to his responsibilities on the Bench, Ukeiley is an adjunct professor at both the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, where he teaches Landlord and Tenant Law, and the New York Institute of Technology. He is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous scholarly works, including two books on Landlord and Tenant Law, titled The Bench Guide to Landlord & Tenant Disputes in New York © (First and Second Editions), and authors a column in The Suffolk Lawyer and edits another in The Nassau Lawyer.

Immediately prior to taking the Bench, Ukeiley was a partner concentrating on commercial and other civil litigation at Jaspan Schlesinger LLP in Garden City and a Court-appointed Arbitrator for the District Court of Nassau County. From 1996 - 1997, he served as Law Clerk to the Honorable E. Thomas Boyle, United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York. Judge Ukeiley earned his Juris Doctor from Hofstra Law School, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Hofstra Labor Law Journal, and his Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University.
