Taxi Driver Dies in East Setauket Crash

Accident occurred at 2:12 a.m. on Friday.

UPDATE, 5:45 p.m. – Police re-opened Route 25A at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Friday following a fatal accident in which a 58-year-old taxi driver from Ridge was killed.

Police said Wayne Bracone was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

A LIPA spokesperson told Patch that the accident cut power to 181 households shortly after it happened at 2:12 a.m., but said all power was restored within two-and-a-half hours.

Bracone was operating a taxi for Islandwide Taxi at the time of the accident. A call to Islandwide management was not returned Friday.

UPDATE, 9:53 a.m. –
Police have identified a taxi driver who died early Friday morning in a car crash in East Setauket as Wayne Bracone, 58, of Ridge. 

Bracone was driving a 2001 Ford for Islandwide Taxi when the cab left the roadway and struck a utility pole at Gnarled Hollow Road and Route 25A. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suffolk police are asking anyone with information on the accident to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

ORIGINAL STORY, 8:40 a.m. – A taxi cab struck a utility pole early Friday morning in East Setauket, killing one, Suffolk police have confirmed.

As of 8:40 a.m. Route 25A remains closed in both directions between Gnarled Hollow Road and Old Town Road. Police said the road is expected to be closed through approximately 1 p.m.

The accident occurred at 2:12 a.m. It is unclear whether it was the driver or a passenger who died.
