Music Makes The Day For Kids At Stony Brook Children's Hospital

WUSB radio deejay Mark Klein knows a thing or two about the blues -- and how to chase them away.

Klein runs the radio program "Long Island Blues Warehouse," which runs Fridays on the Stony Brook University radio station. And after his blues show is done, he heads across campus to Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital, where he brings in professional singers and musicians from around Long Island and New York City to perform pop tunes and rock songs for the kids who are hospitalized.

On Friday, former American Idol contestant Leah Laurenti stopped by to give a mini-concert in the Child Life playroom before going room to room for special performances.

Rachel Ragone, a 16-year-old patient, said the performances she has seen are uplifting.

"It's really nice. It's refreshing," she said. "Everyone's a good singer."

For Klein, it's a way to give back. He has seen too many family members suffering from illnesses like leukemia and wanted to bring some light to the lives of others who may not feel like smiling.

"It's proven to be a very positive, powerful thing," he said. "I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of this."
