The reviews are in.

For the audience, it's the selection of films, the exposure to the filmmakers – the overall appreciation of the idea of a film festival of this scope in our own back yard. For the filmmakers, it's the venue, the audience appreciation, the royal welcome they receive.

As told to Patch, those are some of the reasons why the Stony Brook Film Festival has been a hit year after year among both those who make the movies and those who come to see them.

Take, for instance, writer/director Dustin Morrow, whose film Everything Went Down was shown at 9:30 p.m. on July 21. Following his film's screening, he said he was impressed and felt very welcome.

What else? "The venue is incredible," Morrow said. "I hadn't seen the film on a screen that big yet. It's really cool to see it in a space that has acoustics that are meant to accommodate things besides film screenings. And at 9:30 pm on a Sunday, to come here and see so many people supporting the festival at a late night screening – people staying until almost midnight on a Sunday for a Q&A – that's crazy. I've rarely seen that, and I've been to a lot of festivals."
