I regret that the state of NY is being left out of StonyBrookUniversity! Were it not for Gov,…Read More Rockefeller and Ward Melville, SUNY@SB would never have existed. I hope that NEW YORK is put back in the signage. jsb~~

The only time they dont use children in their photo ops is at a pro choice event
A Stony Brook Resident April 28, 2013 at 05:14 am
I could not hear the language spoken, but I did hear it through my closed windows.... And it was…Read More done by 10. I can live with that. However the Saturday night concert lasted until 5am Sunday. It was not advertised on any event calendar... I thought this one running so late was ridiculous.

Good lord, our wonderful neighbor once again did something that was inconsiderate to the…Read More neighborhood around the university? Say it isn't so! I can't believe my eyes... You mean the traffic, boarding houses and takeover of adjoining land, plus building a hotel 1 mile away from an existing hotel wasn't the end? This must be propaganda by the locals, the college has assured me that they care about the three village area and I believe them! Want to buy a bridge in Brooklyn?
Reality Check May 8, 2013 at 08:47 am
This district is a joke...they tell the kids, here are the classes we are cutting out and IF the…Read More budget passes, we may reinstate the classes...but if the budget fails, MORE classes will be cut....QUITE A QUALITY EDUCATION WE ARE OFFERING OUR KIDS WHILE THE STAFF GETS A 6% RAISE! THE UNION HAS TO GO! VOTE NO!!!!!

So if you think you can do better, then go ahead and run. Put up or shut up. Geez. Stop pointing…Read More fingers, grow a set, and put your hat in the ring.

So tell me then. When and where are the teachers contracts negotiated? Why are we not privy to this?…Read More I have absolutely NO problem with their salaries. We've been blessed with caring and outstanding teachers so far. And I believe you get what you pay for. I DO however take issue with paying for benefits and pensions especially if you're getting a 6+++++ figures in salary. And tenure? Who's guaranteed a job in today's world? Changes do need to take place. Just who is going to be the adults here remain to be seen.
Disgusted! April 19, 2013 at 10:05 am
I will be voting NO. I know its biting my nose to spite my face but I really think its time a…Read More message is sent. If the teachers don't want to help out then its time to cut more of them and make them pay (one way or the other). If they would have come forward and made concessions I would have voted Yes. I am sick at how rudely the Union has behaved. They didn't even try for a second to help out this community. So then I can't possibly help them by voting through the budget and giving them their increases. I realize that they will get their increases regardless, but then cut more teachers and make the hoggish ones who stay behind work harder for their money!!!! At the end of the day, if the students don't pass their Regents, ElA's and Math Standards then it will fall on their shoulders!!!!!! And hopefully with the new evaluations, some of them will now lose their jobs due to underperformance. Too Bad, welcome to the rest of the World!!!! They really need for reality to bit them in the %$#

I've said it before and, I'll say it again. "ALWAYS VOTE NO ON THE FIRST BUDGET. THAT'S WHERE…Read More THE FAT IS!" Remember what happened last year? The first budget was defeated. The second one, approved by voters, was less. The kids didn't suffer. The only ones who "suffered" are those who were looking forward to a big fat, undeserved raise by being promoted to the newly-created position of "second assistant deputy to the third deputy superintendent for proper lunchroom decorum oversight."

All the selfish residents of 3V care about is their "property value". Stop making up the…Read More animal house analogy. Most students are simply looking for affordable housing. Its the town that made up the stupid rule about privacy locks in a house forcing students to put their valuables in their car. Is the town now going to make up rules to tell house owners they can't divide up fridge/cabinet spaces now too? Why not say no locks allowed on all cabinets also. Does the politicans really think a grown adult (college student) cannot decide for themselves what is safe and what is not?
The town should either help the students or hands off as they are a part of the community too. The university should help the students combat these aggressive town rules. The poor attendance including the comment made by a student simply reflects the town is completely out of touch with reality just so they can appease to the selffish homeowners.

I understand and respect everybody's opinions here, but honestly everyone on the road needs to be…Read More more careful about driving especially on school grounds. The district faced the uphill battle a few years back to close the campus at WMHS because of reckless driving on and off campus. Guess what.. there goes another opportunity for students to gain some real life skills. If they get into an accident, guess what.. that's life. If it's not a school principal standing up to ask for safer driving habits, one day it will be their boss, and if they get into real serious trouble, the police. IMHO there needs to be a safer way to create a drop off and go area for students who get driven to school because that's where I see the most potential for an accident. But closing campus just totally takes away another ripe opportunity for young drivers to really understand the value of good driving.

So, Fred and Rocket, (both first time posters and posting within minutes of each other) don't like…Read More that I bring attention to the fact that the driving danger extends to the school zones as well.
Fred wants to justify speeding when the kids are in school. Well Fred/Rocket my personal reason for bringing up the relevant issue is the safety of the children. The speeding occurs at all times of the day when the kids are at the crosswalk as well. Perhaps you don't like my comment because it might bring attention to your reckless driving.
NOT ROCKET SCIENCE April 12, 2013 at 01:57 pm
I have to agree with Mr. Fred. While we all know that reckless drivers can be found just about…Read More everywhere these days, the Principal was speaking about the driving habits of students, parents and yes even his own teachers and asking that everyone take care when driving in school parking lots. I was at the school board mtg as it was a budget meeting. Dr. Baum, (the WMHS Principal), even described situations wherein his Security people had been hit by cars, had their feet run over, and had been cursed by drivers for stopping them. Instead of infusing an additional difficulty as EG did, perhaps we should all just slow down and be respectful of the laws tat already exist when within or around our schools!

Teachers must teach what they are being told to teach. We must be concerned with the common core…Read More because that's the shift in education and like it or not it's here to stay. As a result that has changed or shifted the emphasis of teaching. Teachers all over will be able to infuse the common core standards into the curriculum but there is a learning curve.

Hello disgusted! I appreciate the way you expressed that years ago the children weren't aware of…Read More their grades and you didn't know when the tests were given. I recall that also. I remember it not being not stressful either. My son has help and support it's just a lot of preparing and pretesting that I feel children are becoming test guinnie pigs, rather than students. I'm not against testing them, but I am against the way they way the parents compare scores, push their children, and the way the school spends more time on pre-testing, rubrics and less on what the children really need to know on their grade level. Not all children can be scholars and I have to accept that my children may not be able to. Those children that can take on the academics the level that they are teaching koodos to them. I just feel that if a child does their best with what they have learned, appplies it and everyone has done their job in accordance thats what matters. Teachers should not be so concerned with the common core, rubrics and testing. I'm very respectful of teachers and I feel with what they are expected of them, in time teachers will be disgusted because the passion that had at the beginning will no longer exist for them. So not only are the students not happy the teachers are stressed according to what I'm hearing also.

Another case of the victim being victimized again. Maybe you and other parents have this type of…Read More problem should bring a lawyer to the school and see if there are options for suing the parents of these children. Maybe then, someone will listen. I understand your problem. Many years ago when my son was in middle school the dean of students did nothing for my son. I told her if another person puts a hand on him I will have the police there and she told me that would not be her problem. I told her it would be when they were standing in her office. I also had a tiff with the assistant superintendent of schools when she repeatedly said "I don't know" to too many of my questions. I asked her "Ma'am, for $200,000 a year what is it that you do know?" This is 3Village at its finest.

I agree with you. The parents are probably off worrying more about the cars, big house, etc to have…Read More do anything for their child who is a problem. Oh a copay for getting him help. Well at $20 a week that would be $80 a month and my Iphone payment much be made, Under Armor costs a lot of money for a T-shirt but these are the priorities. My goodness. I too came from a lower to middle class neighborhood. I remember when the guy down the street retired and bought a Cadillac. My goodness the whole street came out and was excited. Now, if you don't have a brand new car every two years and its not a at least BMW you are looked down upon. This is a societal issue and we really need to think about what we are doing, who we are trying to keep up with and what is important. I, once again, stayed home with my kids. No fancy cars, no granite countertops. I taught my sons from 3 years old to hold doors open for people (with my help) now it is rote to them. They are courteous and kind. Not to say they don't have their issues as all kids do. But they do not act out in public. They do not curse at me or anyone and they have NEVER been spanked. They were brought up not babysat. Wake up people.

Patrick as far as the assault at Murphy my daugher says the victim is out of school and being…Read More homeschooled and the perpetrator got OSS for a few days and I think is back to school. Ridiculous. Very disturbing. My daughter was the victim of a repeat offender/problem child last year being verbally abused & threatened via cell phone and in school and the child got ISS for a few days. The dean recognized the child's voice on my daughter's voicemails and yet the child remained in school. Something is very wrong with this picture.
