<p>Managing the area's natural resources, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation maintains its Region 1 headquarters on the campus of Stony Brook University. Consumers can apply for construction permits and purchase sporting licenses here. Among the DEC's other divisions are law enforcement, education, oil spill response, solid and hazardous waste and a wildlife office.</p>
