Photos: An Afternoon At Hobbs Farm

Patch editors got out from behind their laptops and rolled up their sleeves on Thursday to become volunteers at the Hobbs Farm in Centereach, a working farm under the care of Setauket's Bethel AME Church that was established in 2005.

Local editor Christine Sampson, field editor Sara Walsh, and local editor Jennifer Sloat and her children Jack and Julia spent a few hours ridding the farm of weeds.

Along the way, we spoke to Peter Castorano, who along with his son Jason are the caretakers of the farm.

"I like it because my father, may he rest in peace, had a green thumb and it must have worn off on me," he said.

The 11-acre farm supplies local soup kitchens with fresh vegetables and also runs a farm stand on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. But there's one problem.

"The only trouble is we haven't got enough volunteers," Castorano said.
