Volunteer Roundup: Help a Local Teen, Fire Department, or Community Cleanup

Five places you can volunteer this week in the Three Village area.

This week's Volunteer Roundup includes several meaningful ways to give back to your community. You can participate in a bone marrow screening, community cleanup, fire department membership drive, and more. If you are part of a group that is in need of volunteers, please let us know by adding a "Volunteers Needed" announcement or sending us an email.

The life of a 15-year old Suffolk County student-athlete changed when he was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) in January 2010. The family has reached out to the community for help in finding a bone marrow transfer match for their son. If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, you can attend a bone marrow screening drive on Monday, April 11 or Tuesday, April 12 to become a member of the National Bone Marrow Registry. The screening will take place at Stony Brook University from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Student Activities Center, Ballroom A.

If you have the desire to make a difference in a child's life, then getting involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island might be just for you. The Long Island chapter, located in Islandia, is always looking for volunteers to work with children of all ages across Long Island. If you are interested you can contact the group at volunteers@bbbsli.org.

The Setauket Neighborhood House is a community gathering place for many events, classes and workshops. The house is preserved and maintained by the Setauket Neighborhood House Association and they are always looking for community members to become a member of their group to help preserve the history and decor of the historic house. To find out more about membership, call 631-751-6208 or check out the website.

This Saturday, April 16, you can join the Town of Brookhaven and pitch in to help with the Great American Clean Up. Across the country, residents of different communities will come together to make their towns cleaner, better places to live.  This year, groups will be gathering in three local places: the Stephen D. Matthews Nature Preserve in Poquott, the Three Village Community Preserve at Mount Elementary, and West Meadow Beach. You can even gather your own group for a cleanup event and sign up with this online registration form, or call 451-TOWN.
