Photos: "Extreme Makeover" Build in High Gear

As the week goes on, the new Lutz family home takes shape.

As the week progressed, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" volunteers continued to build what promises to be a dream home for siblings Kathleen Lutz and John Lutz Jr. and their six brothers and sisters with Down syndrome.

By Thursday, the home had a new foundation with a frame, roof, and shingles.

On Saturday, Alure president Sal Ferro turned over the keys to Ty Pennington for the Lutz family's arrival on Sunday. Alure spokesman Seth Selesnow said all that was left was finish work, including completing the interior themes and moving in the furniture.

The event has attracted thousands of spectators, including East Setauket resident Herman Werner.

"This is just amazing. It's just a gorgeous structure they're building," Werner said. "It's phenomenal to see all of these people, neighbors, coming from near and far."

One spectator with a special connection to the Lutz family got emotional as she watched the builders. Donna Donnellon, of Port Jefferson Station, knew Grace and John "Jack" Lutz, the Lutz childrens' adoptive parents, for 27 years.

"They were humble people," Donellon said. "They would feel undeserving but they would be extremely grateful...they lived for their children."
