Ward Melville Baseball Falls in State Semifinal

Patriots lose to Baldwinsville on Saturday.

Fresh off of winning its first Long Island championship, the Ward Melville baseball team headed to the state semifinals on Saturday, but fell 2-0 to Baldwinsville, Newsday reported Saturday.

"We've won so many games by being opportunistic,'' Patriots head coach Lou Petrucci told Newsday. "And that's how we lost today, the breaks went their way and not ours. It was a good ballgame. They had some fortunate hits and we didn't.''

The Patriots' streak ended at 11 straight games. Senior ace Anthony Kay, who finished his Ward Melville career with a school record 20 wins, struck out seven and allowed seven hits. He called Baldwinsville hurler Scott Blewett, who struck out nine and allowed just three hits, "almost unhittable."

"We had an amazing season and we battled but came up short," Kay told Newsday.
