Things To Do: #25 – Experience Roller Derby

The Strong Island Derby Revolution kicks off its run at World Gym Setauket on Saturday.

The Strong Island Derby Revolution, an all-female flat track roller derby squad, has rolled into Three Village: the team will challenge the Finger Lakes Lunachicks on Saturday in a bout at 7 p.m. on Saturday at World Gym Setauket.

The Revolution's arrival in East Setauket is a very recent development: Finding a rink to play in is difficult for roller derby leagues, according to the league's founder – a skater from West Islip who goes by the name Doc Block.

"There's very little actual rink time on Long Island," she said. "We're really fortunate to be moving to everything to World Gym."

Bouts consist of two 30-minute periods in which the skaters at various positions score points; the team with the most points wins the bout. The positions have names like "blocker," "pivot blocker," "jammer," and "lead jammer," with the jammers able to score the team's points by passing opposing skaters in laps.

Stay tuned to Patch to learn more about Strong Island Derby Revolution coming up soon. But in the meantime, you can experience roller derby by attending the bout on Saturday. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door; kids under 8 are free. Spectators should bring chairs if they want to sit rink-side.
