Brock Jackolski rushed for 131 yards to surpass 1,000 for the season and freshman Davonte Anderson set a school record with four interceptions to lead Stony Brook to a 55-3 crushing of the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday.
The Seawolves honored their seniors in a ceremony before the game, and then played their most complete contest of the season, dominating Gardner-Webb in every facet for the biggest blowout of the year. Jackolski scored Stony Brook's first special teams touchdown of the season, taking the second half opening kickoff 94 yards to pay dirt. He also added a touchdown rush and a touchdown catch in the game. The defense forced Gardner-Webb quarterback John Rock into throwing five interceptions (4 by Anderson) and seven total turnovers without giving the ball up once.
Heroes: Jackolski shined and showed his versatility by scoring touchdowns three different ways and racking up 289 all purpose yards. In passing 1,000 rushing yards for the season, he and Miguel Maysonet became the only teammates to surpass that milestone in all of Division I. Anderson's Stony Brook record 4 interceptions stopped the Gardner-Webb offense before it could get started and led to 17 Seawolf points off turnovers. Quarterback Michael Coulter played another mistake free game, with a completion ratio at 50 percent and two touchdowns.
Turning Point: Stony Brook was shut down in the first quarter with only 33 yards of offense to Gardner-Webbs's 114. Losing 3-0, the Seawolves finally broke through on Maysonet's three yard touchdown rush, but still did not have a completed pass. Anderson grabbed his first pick of the game the play after the touchdown and set up the play of the game. With Stony Brook relying heavily on the run, they called a play action fake on the first play after the interception. Gardner-Webb fell for the fake, leaving Matt Brevi wide open to receive the Coulter pass and take it in for a 61 yard touchdown. That play set the tone for the Seawolves' domination of 55 straight points.
Quotable: Maysonet on the Seawolves ability to run the ball: "our O-line [offensive line] did a great job. Me and Brock, over 1,000 yards, that definitely says a lot about our O-line coach and our line. We definitely got talent on the line."
Bottom Line: The Seawolves have all the momentum going down to Liberty, who was upset by Coastal Carolina, for the season finale. If they win, they will be the outright Big South champions and will receive a berth in the FCS playoffs for the first time. They would also be undefeated in conference play for the first time ever. Even if Stony Brook loses, they still have a chance to win the conference if Coastal Carolina wins their game next week and forces a three way tie for first place at 5-1. Points against conference opponents would be the deciding tiebreaker. In that scenario, if the Seawolves lose by less than 42 points to Liberty they would win that tiebreaker, an athletic communications representative said.
