Stony Brook Basketball Teams Hopeful for NCAA Bids

Men's, women's conference tournaments start Friday.

The Seawolves are headed to Albany this weekend for a shot at the America East conference championship – and the automatic NCAA tournament bid that comes along with it.

The men's basketball team, having won the regular season title, is the No. 1 seed in their tournament. The women's team, enjoying a turnaround season under the direction of new head coach Beth O'Boyle, are the No. 4 seed.

For the top-seeded men's team in particular, the pressure is on to win the championship and advance to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. Despite winning the regular season title in three of the last four years, the team has each time come up short of the conference championship and automatic NCAA tournament berth.

In an interview with Newsday, senior guard Marcus Rouse put it this way: ""All of them were pretty painful. I remember all of them quite well, so we're just trying to play with that motivation this weekend. That will be huge, not only for me but for the team, the coaching staff and everybody. Remembering that pain and not wanting to endure that. Not again."
