Sports Notebook: Seawolves Honored, High Schools Gearing up for Playoffs

Local teams looking to continue success in soccer, football, and tennis.

Three Stony Brook University Athletes Recognized for Excellence

Dominique Adamo, of Stony Brook University's women's soccer, has been named America East player of the week. Adamo scored two goals last week against Maine and assisted the gamewinner against Binghamton. The Seawolves are the No. 2 seed in the America East tournament, and will play in the semifinals on Sunday, Oct. 31.

The Big South has recognized Miguel Maysonet's performance against Coastal Carolina on Saturday in football, naming him player of the week.  Maysonet reached the 11th highest rushing total for one game in Stony Brook University history.  His 193 yards rushing brought three touchdowns in Stony Brook's second conference win.  The Seawolves will be trying to extend that conference record to 3-0 for a second straight season when they face Charleston Southern on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Raphael Abreu received America East co-player of the week, while bigapplesoccer.com gave him the goal of the week in the men's soccer game against Binghamton. Abreu scored the team's only goals in their 2-1 overtime victory.  The Seawolves are tied at second place in the America East conference, as they look to retain their title as last year's conference champions. Their next game will be against Hartford on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

Ward Melville's boys' soccer team has secured a spot in its 15 consecutive playoff appearance.

Despite injuries leaving two would be starters on the bench, the team has gone 9-2-1 in league play. Its toughest competition has come from Commack and Brentwood, the number one and two teams in the league. But the team's progress is evident in its two matches against Brentwood. The first was a 4-2 loss for Ward Melville, but the next month when the teams met again, they ended in a tie.

"Early on we had a lot of young players who had never played at the varsity level," head coach Jon Stecker said. "The whole team has been able to step up and build around the inexperience. I'd love to face some of those top nonleague teams now that some of the guys have experience under their belt."

Stecker said support and interest in the team has grown. Over 100 athletes tried out for the team this year, up from an average of 50 people each season.

"It shows how much the community has come out to support us," he said. "We have elementary and middle school kids helping out the team, and the game attendance has been tremendous."

Tennis Team Places a Singles Champion

Junior Tylah Gantt won the League VI singles championship last weekend and will advance to see how she fares at the Long Island-wide and possibly the state-wide level.

The Bears (10-2, 10-3) have finished the regular season, taking the number two spot in League VI, behind main competition Sachem East.

"I expected a good season, but they have just been terrific," head coach Frances Pistell said.

Girls' Soccer to Defend Championship Title

Injuries have hurt The Stony Brook School's girls' soccer team in games against its toughest competition, namely Smithtown Christian, which has handed the Bears their only two losses this season. But that hasn't stopped them from securing the No. 2 seed in Class C.

The Bears will be playing their last two games of the regular season this week in recognition of their seniors.  One of those seniors, Michelle Hennesey, has the fourth-highest scoring total in Suffolk County, with 16 goals.

Head coach Mark Maningo, last season's coach of the year, said coping with injury has been difficult.

"It's tough to have the younger players step up on offense, but we've been able to get through the league," Maningo said. "We've had great help defensively from Brianna Stiklickas and the other girls. There were a couple of games when we couldn't get it together. But we expect some good play in the postseason."

The Class C county championship will be held Nov. 5.
